During the Siege of Vicksburg even officers in the Union Army were required to bear a pass to leave the lines of the Federal Army. An Original Civil War Pass bearing a striking printed logo - "Headquarters Department of the Tennessee, In the Field Before Vicksburg " issued to :Lieut Colonel William Swain, 34th Indiana Infantry June 14, 1863, to allow him to go on furlough to Memphis, Tennessee and will be permitted to take a servant "but not an enlisted man". The Pass is approved and signed in ink by "Loren Kent "Lieut Col. And Provost Marshal Gen'l, Army Before Vicksburg". Sadly Lt Colonel William Swain, was furloughed because of wounds received at Champion's Hill, Mississippi a month before, and died of the wounds at Memphis, 3 days after the pass was issued. Comes w service info. Lt Colonel Swain, of Ossian, Indiana along with his 16 year old son James enlisted together in 1861 and Swain led his men in heavy fighting at the Battles of Port Gibson and Champion Hill. Lt Col Loren Kent , of Jacksonville, Illinois enlisted as a private, rising to command of the 29th Illinois Infantry and ended the War a brevet brigader general, dying of Yellow Fever at Galveston, Texas soon after the War A very uncommon Pass issued at the Siege of Vicksburg. 1p approx 6 x 3", ptd/ink,.
