This trip back into the exciting days of logging railroads in the southwestern part of Virginia, the northwestern part of North Carolina and the northEastern part of Tennessee uncovers an amazing number of long forgotten railways, tram-roads, and narrow gauge lines, as well as many ghost towns in the Southern mountains that thrived at first then faded with the passing of the logging industry. Every conscious of economy, the logging men utilized nearly every possible gauge to get into the forests: three and a half foot, three foot, and two foot were used, the latter being the only example known in the South. This volume connects the stories of the Pennsylvania, Ohioans, and Minnesotans who found the Southern states ripe for exploration after the timber in their own areas had been cut out, and how they went for the high ground of Mount Rogers in Virginia, Mount Mitchell in North Carolina and Mount Sassafras in South Carolina, each the highest peak in the respective state. This called for geared locomotives and the area abounded with Lima Shays, Heislers, and Climax machines that could tackle the steep grades and negotiate rough and curvy temporary trackage. All pictures are of the actual item.
