KUEI / GUI TABLET CARVED IN JADE - HAN DYNASTY (206 BC - 220AD)Large Kuei or gui tablet carved in jade presenting nine salamander "lions" in high relief, (baffie, lebraude legendary reptile not to be confused with the real amphibian). On the underside a long salamander reptile engraved.Partially Calcified Jade
Admirers of ancient Chinese jade have often noted the curious chalky white areas that invade the polished surfaces of many artifacts. This phenomenon, described as "weathering", "calcification", seems to be limited to ancient (Shang to Han dynasty, 1766 BC to 220 AD), burial-related artifacts. The weathering appears to be related to selective dissolution along the grain boundaries by high pH ammoniacal solutions produced during the decomposition of the corpses with which the jades were buried. Analyzes showed that they were all nephritis. This mineralogy is consistent with the antiquity of the artifacts, since the other jade mineral, jadeite, was not introduced to China until the 18th century AD.
This tablet presents a calcification of the jade in the upper right part, sufficiently deeply anchored in the material to be able to affirm that it is natural and ancient.Dimensions: Length 28.2 cm - width 6.7 cm - thickness 2.5 cm
