The Composition Art for a famous Mayer Cover!

This sale Includes:
THREE MOUSEKETEERS #7Original Composition Art, Comic Art Size (Much Bigger Than The Size Of A Color Guide) By Sheldon Mayer, He Has Even Applied His Stamp To The Upper Reverse (See Pic's!)THE ORIGINALCOVER WORK FROM THE START OF 1971, NOT A MERE PRINT OR REPRODUCTION, ALL WRITING AND COLORS AND SOME WHITE AND INKS ARE APPLIED BY HAND, ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS TO HAVE STARTED AS A STAT OF THE MICE AND FOOT AND LEG, AND THEN DOWN THE LEFT SIDE HE WROTE "FACES OF CHARACTERS GO HERE", ENVISIONING HOW THE FINAL COVER WOULD BE LAID OUT. (THIS WAS BEFORE THINGS LIKE PRICE OR ISSUE NUMBER OR CODE SEAL AND OTHER SUCH DETRACTORS WERE ADDED.) VAROUS NOTES/SUGGESTIONS, WRITTEN IN THE MARGIN, AND INDEED THE PUBLISHED VERSION DID END UP WITH A WHITE LOGO, AS MR. MAYER SUGGESTED HERE, ALTHOUGH THE POWERS-THAT-BE ELECTED TO GO WITH BLUE JEANS ON THE SKATER INSTEAD OF PURPLE AS SEEN HERE, AND THEY INSTEAD USED THE PURPLE ON THE TENNIS SHOE, CONFIRMING WHAT A WORK-IN-PROGRESS THIS NOSTALGIC COVER ART WAS, AT THIS STAGE. THE SIGNATURE, TO BOTTOM LEFT, APPEARS TO BE PART OF THE STAT, NOT WRITTEN BY HAND, BUT THE STAMP OF MAYER TO THE UPPER REVERSE WAS SURELY APPLIED BY HIM, OVERALL SIZE IS IMPRESSIVE AT 10.5" X 14", ON THIN PAPER, PRE-CREASED ACROSS THE CENTER, NOT HEAVY BOARD."TRADEMARK" SHELDON MAYER, MUCH LIKE SUGAR AND SPIKE AND OTHER HIT TITLES OF THE PERIOD!This, with some minor editorial changes, eventually became the cover to the final issue, a 64 page giant featuring the 3 Mouseketeers along with Dodo and the Frog, Dizzy Dog, and Doodles Duck. This piece wasbeautifully rendered, and would be ideal to frame andhang on a wall, shelf, or desk; A conversation piece of the highest order.(You could pick up a copy of the old comic book, to display along with it!) The incredible attention to detail becomes apparent when it's viewed in person.Very unusual piece, a true glimpse into this legendary talent's creative process. A mere color guide would be much smaller, include the other adornments such as month and price, and often have just enough of the color, splashed in a haphazard fashionin a particular area, to show the printer what color to use where. This one is earlier in the process and has a lot of attention to detail and different media, including watercolor and/or marker, colored pencil, conte, pastels.. See the photographs, which don't do it justice.
Issues of this cult-classic title from during this part of this beloved eraweren't always done by someone this adept, such as the legendary Sheldon Mayer, who handled the pencils and inks on this particular cover, which were xeroxedonto this large thin art paperso they could belavishly embellished further by this talent, adding the upper masthead region and portrait area along the left side, along with adding color, creating this unique work. This actual item was used by DC Comics to help produce the front cover to thedouble-size comic-book, which was cover-dated May - June, 1971. It was part of the Jack Adler Collection, and will include a C.O.A.This gorgeous artwork is a perfect addition to anybody's art collection, and is more awesome than the famous comic cover that it produced... It is quite striking! This would be a great addition to any collection ofcomic-art or Mayer covers and paper ephemera or the DC Comic fan's collection... --'Nuff said! Many of you have read about cover production art in C.B.M. and/or C.B.G.
(Comic Book Marketplace #85 or Comics Buyer's Guide #'s 1399, 1402, 1414, etc.)We are secure packagers and prompt shippers so expect to be pleased.Back in the "good ole days",most publishersnormally burned ordiscarded such production art once the comic went to print. Fortunately, Jack Adler, long-term Vice President of Production at DC Comics, took home a good assortment of the DC archives of comic art, representing such crucial artistic steps in the comics' cover-making process!Additional pieces can now be found by checking the other Key Comics items. Buy aggressively, as such items are truly one-of-a-kind, and old cover production pieces as a whole are notoriously rare. Hand-colored Covers are exceedingly rare in the market, and very impressive, as you can see brushstrokes and color variations, in some cases desired by the creator, which never make it to the final product... It's significantly larger than comic-size, more than a foot tall. Because they were part of the original raw artistic process, they can include tack-holes, pasteovers, tape, indentations from a paper clip, tears, staple-holes, white-out, and/or edge wear. Thankfully this one looks great, and must be seen in person to be appreciated.Bone-white whites and nice rich colors, obviously very well preserved for posterity! This is a must-have piece for any fan of ultra-rare original art, or for thecartoon comic & art collector, or the serious DC memorabilia buff, or just theart fan who doesn't have four-figure$ to drop on a b/w cover but still enjoys owning true rarities ~ to keep himself satisfied visually, while keeping his portfolio diversified in a most dramatic fashion! As Usual: LOWBUY IT NOWAND !
