Context:The avant garde and Expressionist stage and film director Max Reinhardt (1873-1943) started the annual summer Salzburg Festival with composer Richard Strauss and dramatist Hugo von Hofmannstall in 1920. A particular directorial favourite of Reinhardt was Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', which he first staged at Salzburg in 1927.
In 1935 it became his first American film. He founded theatres and drama schools in Austria and Germany in the early 20th century, and later opened the Reinhardt School of Theatre in Hollywood.
In 2002 Montblanc became the exclusive sponsor of the Young Directors Project at the Salzburg Festival. From 2003, Montblanc have made annual limited Editions of 'Hommage À Max Reinhardt' fountain pens each year, in small numbers of 20 or 30. The pens were sold during the Salzburg Festival at the Montblanc boutique in Alter Markt, Salzburg, with profits helping to fund the Young Directors Project. The winning ensemble of the Young Directors Project were also given one of the limited edition Max Reinhardt pens.
Hommage à Max Reinhardt
The way individuals express themselves is rooted in the culture of writing - as is Montblanc.
For this reason, it is part of Montblanc's mission to promote art and culture. This commitment is reflected in a range of different activities:
The Montblanc Arts Patronage Award contributes to the active fostering of culture today, honouring outstanding contemporary patrons of the theatre, art and literature. By way of the Donation Pens, Montblanc supports specially selected art and cultural projects - such as the Philharmonia of the Nations.
Since 2003 Montblanc has been taking the company philosophy to new levels as the exclusive sponsor of another international event: the Young Directors Project. Founded in 2002, this project is part of the legendary Salzburg Festival established by world-famous theatre director Max Reinhardt.
An exclusive Montblanc edition bearing his name pays tribute to Reinhardt's creative legacy while celebrating the achievements of talented new directors.
Max Reinhardt
(MAXIMILIAN GOLDMANN, 1873 - 1943)
Born in Baden (near Vienna), Austria in 1873 as the son of a Jewish businessman, Maximilian Goldmann Reinhardt fell in love with the theatre at an early age. He took private acting lessons alongside a banking apprenticeship and was just seventeen when he first trod the boards.
Other engagements followed, with Reinhardt combining the roles of actor, director and producer. He was soon managing theatres across Austria and Germany, the most famous being the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.
Widely regarded as the founder of modern stage direction, it is difficult to overestimate Reinhardt's influence on theatre in Germany and beyond. His spectacularly elaborate productions both dazzled audiences and challenged convention. Perhaps his most lasting personal legacy, though, is the annual Salzburg Festival. This defining achievement was followed in 1937 by emigration via London to New York, where he spent his remaining years.
Young Directors Project
In August 2002, an exciting new competition for young European theatre directors was incorporated into the Salzburg Festival. The Young Directors Project has since become an annual event, with participants selected on the basis of their potential to achieve worldwide success, especially with younger audiences.
This high-profile project of the Salzburg Festival is fully supported by the director of the Salzburg Festival program, Thomas Oberender. As one of Europe's foremost theatre directors and dramatists, Thomas Oberender has always appreciated the ideals that made Max Reinhardt one of modern theatre's most important influences.
Montblanc is the exclusive sponsor of the Young Directors Project, in keeping with the cultural commitment that underlies the brand. This involvement is both financial, in the shape of
the Montblanc Young Directors Project Award, and symbolic: each year, the best ensemble also receives a trophy and a special Montblanc Max Reinhardt Limited Edition.
The Salzburg Festival
In 1918, Max Reinhardt, the composer Richard Strauss and the conductor Franz Schalk came together in Vienna to plan a uniquely ambitious cultural program comprising works by Mozart, operas by Gluck and Weber, Goethe's Faust, and plays by Shakespeare, Schiller and Grillparzer.
The group was later joined by celebrated playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who saw the Salzburg Festival as part of a moral mission destined to embrace the entire European continent.
The first event staged by the festival organisers was the world première of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's
"Jedermann". However, for Max Reinhardt it was A Midsummer Night's Dream that held a special fascination and became a remarkable success. "In Shakespeare's lovely fantasy," he wrote, "I have always seen, above all, a charming, hopeful reminder that since life itself is a dream, we can escape it through our dreams within a dream."
On a warm summer evening in August 1927, Max Reinhardt premiered his interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream in Salzburg, and received universal acclaim. This enchanting fairytale, with its spectacle, beauty, charm and eloquence, will once again be captivating visitors to this year's Salzburg Festival.
Montblanc Max Reinhardt 2007 LE30:inspired bya midsummer night's dream
The play that fascinated Max Reinhardt more than any other, and being staged thirteen times between 1905 and 1934, was the inspiration for this unique Limited Edition, which features Oberon and Titania's elves and fairies engraved in genuine rock crystal and inlaid in a solid 750 white gold cap and barrel.
As Shakespeare's celebrated play unfolds, Oberon, king of the fairies, and his queen, Titania, arrive in the forest to attend the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazonian queen Hippolyta.
Oberon seeks to punish Titania and recruits the mischievous Puck to help him apply a magical potion which makes the victim fall in love with the first living thing they see when they awaken.
Crowning this truly exceptional creation, the rock crystal inlays on both cap and barrel feature garlands of these forest flowers. A sapphire set in the clip and the Montblanc star in shimmering mother-of-pearl add the final touch to this inspired homage to the creative genius of Max Reinhardt, which is strictly limited to an edition of just 30 pieces. The 18-carat solid gold platinum-plated nib is a further superb example of outstanding Montblanc craftsmanship, with its engraved silhouette of the Hohensalzburg fortress which overlooks Salzburg - symbolising the link between a long-established theatre tradition and the culture of writing.
