The tenor with the voice of the century

Luciano Pavarotti was born in 1935 in the Italian town of Modena, growing up in humble circumstances as the son of a baker.

At the age of 21, Pavarotti began to study classical voice and in 1961 he made his début as

"Rodolfo" in Puccini's “La Bohème"- the beginning of an unsurpassed singing career.

Luciano Pavarotti inspired millions of people all over the world with his exceptional

Iyrical vocal tone whilst waving a white handkerchief, which became his trademark.

It was this special combination of musical instinct, God-given voice, passion for singing and the pursuit of perfection, which made him so unique.

He sailed effortlessly and with impressive supremacy to the top of the tenor range, and at his peak could hold a high C for more than ten seconds. In 1972, he hit this high note nine times in Donizetti's opera "La Fille du Régiment" at the New York Met – a masterly performance which established his extraordinary reputation.

None shall sleep (Nessun dorma)

Pavarotti reached the zenith of his success with Puccini's opera “Turandot" and his signature aria "Nessun Dorma". Pavarotti’s role in "Turandot" the Unknown Prince, spells out the famous line “None shall sleep” while he waits for the new day to come.

The stunning vocal performance of this emotional aria left audiences breathless long after Pavarotti vanished behind the final curtain, drenched in sweat and ovations, wearing one of his beloved scarves around his neck.

The tenor's trademark garment is reflected in the clip, wrapped around the cap with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. His signature is engraved on the 750 solid gold cap ring, enhanced with ornaments from the Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti in Modena.

While composing "Turandot", set in the age of ancient China, Giacomo Puccini delved deep into the musical history of the Far East and based several themes on traditional Chinese anthems and melodies.

This cultural heritage inspired the design of the Luciano Pavarotti Limited Edition 98: a famous creature of the Chinese mythology entwines around the writing instrument's cap and barrel - the dragon, made of masterfully skeletonised 750 solid gold.

Bridging Italy and the Far East

Puccini's musical motif for the role of Princess Turandot resembles a song once created during the Qing Dynasty, called "Mo Li Hua" – the “Tasmine". Traditionally performed on jade chimes, the lyrics of this song poetically describe the beauty and splendour of jasmine, the symbolic flower of China.

Delicately engraved in white jade, a white jasmine flower adorns the 750 solid gold cone, which is lavishly decorated with beautiful floral ornaments from the Far East.

With his role in “Turandot" Luciano Pavarotti set off from his Italian hometown Modena to conquer the world with his masterful singing artistry.

In 2007, the year of his passing, the opera house in Modena was renamed «Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti" in honour of the city's most famous son. The velvet curtain of the opera stage is symbolised by the red lacquer of cap and barrel, enhanced with a delicate guilloche.

Passion for the next generation

Pavarotti wrote history in the world of opera with his sublime concerts and about 100 million records sold. His brilliant rendition of «Nessun dorma" as part of the performance with lose Carreras and Plácido Domingo as "The Three Tenors" at the 1990 World Cup in Italy made him the first opera singer to be celebrated as a superstar around the globe. Pavarotti was praised for his artistic achievements with countless awards, such as the "Excellency in Culture Award". given to Pavarotti by the Italian Minister for Culture in recognition of his major contribution to preserving and promoting Italian art and culture. In 1998, Pavarotti was presented with the "Grammy Legend Award" for his contributions and influence in the music industry.

Inspired by the year of this award, which placed the classical tenor in the ranks of the superstars of pop music, this Luciano Pavarotti Limited Edition is strictly limited to 98 pieces worldwide.

Away from the big stage, Luciano Pavarotti gave free singing lessons to young up-and-coming singers from all over the world right up until his death in 2007 in Modena. He wanted to show his appreciation for the gift of his unique voice by passing on his experience and passion for singing to talented young singers. These included the Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who has graced the stages of Europe's major opera houses in the recent past.

The big heart of the "Grandissimo"

In the early 1990s, Pavarotti started organizing benefit concerts, which were not only a great success musically but were particularly successful in raising money for charity. With "Pavarotti & Friends", the opera star brought together famous musicians from different genres, such as Bono, Stevie Wonder and Elton John, for the concerts in his home town of Modena.

He donated the proceeds, which ran to several millions, to social projects and refugee camps in international areas of conflict. Luciano Pavarotti, whose delicately engraved portrait adorns the 750 solid gold nib of this Limited Edition, was given numerous awards for his charity work, including the title of UN Messenger of Peace, presented to him by

Kof Annan.

A tenor with extraordinary style

At the beginning of his career, Luciano Pavarotti often wore a suit and tie when he wasn't under the spotlights. Over the years he invented and refined his own extraordinary style that visually set him apart from all other classical artists. He soon became famous for his striking hats and brightly-coloured shirts with Hawaiian flower patterns - and he developed his distinctive habit of wearing exquisite large scarves.

Montblanc created the Luciano Pavarotti Limited Edition 98 to pay tribute to a man who truly stood out from the rest - with his ethereal voice and unparalleled talent, his awe-inspiring appearance and, first and foremost, with his constant efforts to help those far from the limelight.
