AL CAPONE CHICAGO OUTFIT LEXINGTON HOTEL LOBBY KEROSENE CIGAR LIGHTER GANGSTERS :
$7500.00

A rare kerosene lighter from Chicago's Lexington Hotel, the former four year residence of Al Capone.  This kerosene lighter is from that era and there's a high likelihood Capone and many from his Outfit lit a few cigars on it. This lighter came from the collection of former Illinois Governor Big Jim Thompson.   I've previously sold another rare lighter from his collection from the 19th century. It measures approximately 13 3/8 inches tall. Good condition with glass bubble on bottom, slight tilt to the wick base, and light loss to the wick glass as pictured.

Lexington Hotel was Al Capone's residence from 1928-1932. Capone and his entourage occpied the second, then the fourth and fifth floor, maintaining bodyguards in surrounding rooms next to, above and below his personal suite.  Lexington Hotel was built in 1892 as a residential Hotel and designed by Clinton Warren.  Photographs for reference onlyfrom the expert Capone website, myalcaponemuseumdotcom.

AL CAPONE`S OLD HEADQUARTERS, 93-YEAR-OLD LEXINGTON HOTEL, GAINS United Press InternationalCHICAGO TRIBUNE Ahotel once used by Al Capone as his headquarters has been declared a Chicago landmark and the present owner thinks the notorious mobster may have left some souvenirs behind. ''It would not suprise me if we found either money or dead bodies,'' said Patricia J. Porter, who last year bought the shuttered, 93-year-old Lexington Hotel on the South Side for $500,000. The landmark designation was awarded by the Chicago City Council to the hotel where ''Scarface'' Capone rented the fourth and fifth floors from 1928 to 1932. He converted the hotel into a brothel and headquarters for his illicit empire. Porter, who plans to reopen the hotel as an apartment complex, says there could be money in a sealed concrete vault beneath the hotel. In a Lima, Ohio, house used by Capone, $50,000 in gold and certificates has been found. The vault will be opened after rehabilitation begins in March. Capone, who knew how precarious a gangster`s life could be, had the hotel fitted to his special needs. An entrance to a secret staircase is hidden behind a mirror near a lavander bathtub used by Capone. There are 11 other secret staircases concealed in the hotel`s structure. Beneath the hotel on South Michigan Avenue are 10 tunnels, one leading across the street to where the Metropole Hotel once stood. ''He could get in and out of the hotel without anyone ever seeing him,'' Porter said. ''Right now all the tunnels are collapsed because of the construction above them over the years.'' The hotel was built in 1892 in time to open for the Columbian Exposition the following year. President Grover Cleveland, who opened the fair, spent his honeymoon in the Lexington Hotel. Porter purchased the hotel for $500,000 and hopes to complete the renovation in time for the planned 1992 Chicago World`s Fair. Copyright 2021,Chicago Tribune
