Extremely Rare 47 Star American(new Mexico) Flag Made By H. Channon Co. In 1912 :
Extremely rare 47 Star American Flag. Made in 1912, by the H. Channon Co. of Chicago, IL. New Mexico was admitted to the Union as a state on January 6, 1912. Five weeks later on February 14, 1912, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th State. Under the terms of the Flag Act of 1818, a state could not have an official state Flag designation until July 4th of the year of statehood. As a result New Mexico never had an official state Flag. Only a very few (less than 12 known) unofficial state Flags are known to exist, that were made in 1912, to celebrate the admission of New Mexico into the Union. Examples of the unofficial 47 Star American Flag can be found in the Almagordo Museum of History in Almagordo, New Mexico, the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Fort McHenry National Monument, the Historical Shrine in Baltimore, Maryland and the Smithsonian Instiutution in Washington, D.C. Measurements: 42" X 87" Sotheby's has indicated that the subject Flag "is indeed a rare item."
