A day without laughter is a day wasted – Charlie Chaplin
Even 40 years after his death, Charlie Chaplin has not lost any of his popularity to the present day.
His signature role as the tramp is one of just a handful of figures in the history of film-making which are known and loved by different generations all over the world.
This instrument pays tribute to perhaps the greatest figure of 20th century cinema, Charlie Chaplin.
Chaplin’s character, the Little Tramp, represents the indomitable spirit of humanity, comically beset by adversity but never defeated.
This pen’s intricate cog-wheels in 18K solid white gold suggest the machines and machinations featured in Chaplin’s most celebrated film, Modern Times.
In what can be described as a stunning specimen of artistic brilliance, the pen has been designed to signify Chaplin’s persona:
the barrel and cone suggest his baggy trousers; the captop is based upon his bowler hat; and the solid gold clip resembles his cane.
Each cog-wheel is set with a brilliant-cut white diamond (circa 0.18 ct) and the captop is set with a luminous mother-of-pearl Montblanc star.
Notice for MB Artisan Collectors:
This model represents a milestone in MB early artisan production.
Montblanc greatly underestimated the labor and expense of making this intricate masterwork, and thus the cost of production exceeded the pre-release advertised price.
Montblanc honoured the originally-advertised price and quickly sold the full run of 88 pens at a significant loss.
It is rumoured that as a result of this miscalculation, Montblanc has decided to never again create a pen of this intricacy and labor-intensiveness.
This pen, then, can be said to represent the highest evolution of Montblanc’s famous design ethic, a pinnacle unlikely ever to be matched.
Because of the The intricate cog-wheels design, MB Charlie Chaplin LE88 can be regarded as the connection point between watch collecting and pen collecting.
A very rare writing instrument that has become a must-have.
I am very happy to to be able to offer to the next caretaker this gorgeous masterpiece. One of the most important and iconic Montblanc Artisan LE ever produced.
In the last ten years I had the privilege of owning around 10% of total Chaplin production. I must admit that the specimen here offered for sale is the best I came across so far.
Of course it comes in pristine and untouched condition (never used and never inked) but that’s not the point.
What makes this specific Chaplin so special really is the “full set PLUS configuration”. In fact, on top of the “regular” boxes and accessories (white cardboard outer box, illustrated inner box, black lacquered display box, booklet and card stating the matching limitation number: #20)this mind-blowing example comes together with: original sales receipt, Chaplin book from Taschen’s Movie Icon Collection (with the rare Montblanc band), 2 CD SET Charlie Chaplin The Essential Film Music Collection performed by The city of Prague Philharmonic, conducted by Carl Davis, Invitation card for the exclusive Chaplin launch event at “24” (24 Kingly Street, London, UK) and the Charlie Chaplin cocktail receipt.
DESIGN FEATURES:
- Inspired by the film Modern Times, a masterpiece of 1936 in which Chaplin slipped in the role of a tramp
- The intricate cog-wheels, made of solid white gold, which appear to drive one another on the black precious lacquer / Titanium / of the cap and barrel, symbolise the industrial machinations featured in Modern Times
- Cone inspired by Chaplins baggy trousers and splayed feed, clad in oversized shoes
- Cap top refers to his typical bowler hat
- Clip inspired by Chaplin’s walking cane
- The limitation number (88) is referring to Chaplin’s age when he died on 25 December 1977
- Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl
