4 Places to Read on International Literacy Day

What’s the obvious activity choice for International Literacy Day? Read a book! That said, you (or your kids) don’t have to sit at home reading by yourself. Where can you take a book to on this special day? Check out these book-reading options that will make celebrating International Literacy Day even more fun!
Go outside.
Bring a book to the park. International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8th. That’s means in most places, it’s still warm enough to go outside. Take your favorite read to a shady tree or a park bench. Spend the afternoon reading to the kids or having them read to you!
Visit an animal shelter.
What? That’s right—an animal shelter. Some shelters have special programs that allow children to read to the dogs. This gives the animals some companionship and lets your little reader practice her skills.
Take a trip to a nursing home.
Stash a stack of entertaining books in a backpack and head off to the local senior center or nursing home. Read to the seniors, bringing a little bit of light into their day.
See a friend.
Schedule a book-filled playdate. Your child can have a mini book club with her friends, reading to each other or flipping through books. The same goes for an all-adult book ‘playdate’. Pick a book that everyone will read, and then get together to discuss it.
