This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an actual Civil War token die. Thetokens it made werefor Abraham Lincoln's re-election in 1864 with a portrait of Andrew Johnson on the reverse. They are cataloguedby George & Melvin Fuld in "Patriotic Civil War Tokens"as132/149 andby Edmund B. Sullivan in "American Political Badges and Medalets 1789-1892" (based on the works of J. Doyle DeWitt) as AL 1864-67. Itis one of only a handful of original dies that are still in existence, the only others that we are aware of are Patriotic dies 123, 129, 131, 153and 173. However, the use of this die was significantlydifferent compared to the others and likely created thousands of pieces while the others only made a very limited number generally for collectors rather than for circulation with the exception of 173. Another important aspect about it is the fact that it is cracked which is shown on the tokens proving its authenticity.It is massive weighing over four pounds and is approximately76mm tall x 67mm at its base. A product ofDuncan & Sharp fashioned for Rudolph P. Laubenheimer who struck the tokens. The last two photos are of an actual token which is included.
