RARE AND ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR-DATED CDV PORTRAIT OF EMANCIPATED SLAVE CHILDREN FROM NEW ORLEANS TAKEN IN 1863
An imprint on the recto indicates that, “These Children, Were turned out of the St. Lawrence Hotel, Chestnut St., Philadelphia, on account of Color,” and on the verso that, “The nett proceeds from the sale of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of Colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen’l. Banks.”

Contains the photographer’s imprint on the recto, measures 4 by 2.5 inches, and in near fine condition with the corners clipped and light staining. A sad and unusual portrait of three young children who lived the perils of slavery in the United States.
