18th Century Turkish Ottoman Chest with Mother-of-Pearl and Arabic Text:
Item Description: An extremely rare and very fine late 18th or early 19th century chest, trunk or large casket from Turkey, probably Istanbul. This large chest features extraordinary all over paneled mother of pearl, inlaid with magnificent ebony wood calligraphy in Arabic text, further decorated with bands of mahogany and bone and with geometric accents, set on oak. The quality and execution of the calligraphy inlay work is some of the finest we have ever seen. The inner lid, equally elaborately inlaid with a recessed band and stepped decorative panel with floral trees flanking the central motif. Approx. Measurements: H 18.5 in. x W 41.5 in. x D 27 in. Condition: Stable solid condition with some losses and restoration commensurate with use and age for an item of this type.
