Tintype Mother w/ Daughter Post Mortem Two Women Mourning Victorian Hand Tinted.

A loving final portrait of a mother and her recently passed teenage (?) daughter. The mother is donning her mourning dress and the daughter is dressed in a manner typical of her age in this era. Denote how the mother’s face is more blurred in contrast to the stillness and clarity of the daughters face due to the long exposure times necessary to capture a photographic image with the tintype process.

Note the hand-tinted rouging on both women’s cheeks.

Also Note: Upon close inspection it is not obvious that this is, in fact, a mother and daughter. The seated woman looks young for having a full grown daughter. The kneeling woman could be a teenager or young adult. Additionally, it is difficult to see a close family resemblance-for that reason, the exact circumstances of this portrait are a bit uncertain and a mystery to me. I am assuming it is a mother and daughter, as would be most typical for this type of portrait-but, who knows, maybe they are “best friends” or sisters.

Many post-mortem portraits of the era convey a certain morofferity; however, this one conveys, in my opinion, a serene and bittersweet mood.
