1954 BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES Atomic Nuclear Reactor 3 VISITORS DAY BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES Atomic Nuclear Energy 3 VISITOR'S DAY ITEMHere is some unusual ephemera in relation to the historic Upton / Long Island, New York based Atomic Nuclear Energy Facility BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES .... This reactor, which opened in 1950, was the first reactor to be constructed in the United States, just following World War II.
This rare ephemera was taken from an old scrapbook and all pieces are dated 1954..
The historical scrapbook belonged to Gyrodyne Corportation Chief Aerodynamicist Walter J. Bastedo. Walter J. Bastedo, is honored on the "Wall of Honor" at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. and is credited with developing some of the first unmanned drone helicopters for the US Navy at Gyrodyne Co. during the 1950s and 1960s..
As stated, this tour required a US Security Clearance, which Mr. Bastedo had following Gyrodyne's 1950 contract with the US NAVY..You will receive ALL of the following:
October, 1954 BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES VISITOR'S DAY Illustrated Blue Booklet .. (9" X 6 1/2" / 16 pages) describes the new Upton, NY facility with 8 photo illustrations..
1949 Yellow BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES "ABC's of RADIATION" Booklet (5 3/4" X 4" / 32 pages) -- Interesting in both it's patently sexist allusions and the simplistic 1949 misconceptions about the minor dangers of radioactivity. A real hoot!!
And finally (1) October 16, 1954 Family Day Program Blue Tour sheet, describing the visit with maps on the back..
This rare ephemera is early in BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES' history indeed!!
The condition of this rare ephemera remains generally very good, as you see... There are some vestiges of old tape, as shown..
All pages are complete and generally well preserved as shown, with no missing pages..
please examine all images...
