Samuel Wade was born at Ipswich, Suffilk, and was a basket maker when he enlisted into the 8th Foot at Newport, Hampshire, on 27 April 1805, a volunteer from the West Essex Militia, aged 20 years. Promoted to Corporal in June 1810 and to Sergeant in June 1813, he was reduced to Private in December 1813, but made up his ranks again in April and September 1814. He transferred to the 1st Veterans Company in March 1823, and to the Invalid Depot Staff in June of that year, and was finally discharged on 25 November 1833.

He served ‘In the Expedition to Hanover in 1805; At Copenhagen in 1807; In the West Indies Four months; In America Eight years; Was four times wounded, and behaved gallantly on several occasions as appears by his discharge from the 8th Foot.’ Sergeant Samuel Wade was taken prisoner in the sortie from Fort Erie on 17th September 1814. Sold with copy discharge papers and relevant muster rolls.
