IT'S HARD TO SEE THE MAGNITUDE OF A NECKLACE LIKE THIS WITH THE ALLOWED 12 PHOTOS.I HAVE MANY MORE PHOTOS OF THIS NECKLACE-PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM!
Check out the PBS News Hour, where they were so impressed by this amazing artist at Santa Fe’s International Folk Art Market that they did a whole hour show on her! (Also at bottom of listing)
Taking month's to make, this showcases Mary's incredible eye & talent for mosaic art! Personally, this is a "Masterpiece" necklace that should be showcased in a Native American museum somewhere! It's a "one of a Kind" piece & with a necklace that took this much cutting, shaping, slicing going on,it's not like you can just whip a necklace like this out in a matter of a week or 2! It was carefully made with love & time!
Having a happy-ultra colorful vibe through out, this is made with just about every kind of stone & shell known to Pueblo jewelry. This is a lengthy 35" long "BIRD" Squash Blossom necklace where Mary pumped the love into each & every one of the 7 birds! Each are made in her abstract funky folk art style, where some you know exactly what kind of bird they are, where as others are so abstract that it'll all be based on how your "eyes see them to be''.
You might call Mary a "painter",but instead of using paint brush's & a canvas, this artist 'paints' her subjects in a mosaic array of stones & shells..This squash blossom is made with an "Owl" whose big eyes are made with Cowrie shell & whose body is made of brown Spiderweb Serpentine & has an outline of white Alabaster. Then there's a Hummingbird with a colorful mosaic interior, a Thunderbird who displays a wide wing span & is absolutely beautiful where she used the shapes of the sliced shell to give it it's flourished artsy look! The center is another Thunderbird made of vivid blue Kingman turquoise & vibrant orange spiny oyster shell, whereas above that is one of her more beautifully made doves that that I've had, where you can just see her goal was to make it one of her more colorful ones, being how it was designed with a multi colorful outline & her signature Conus shell being used for it elaborate tail & it's floral interior! Then the smallest of the bunch is the New Mexico "Roadrunner" who has a body of turquoise, channel mosaic inlay cuts that are sandwiched between horizontal cuts of abalone & spiny oyster below..Finally the abstract artistic concept of a "Duck" who like the Dove is so remarkably designed & has Mary's 'signature' look everywhere your eyes go! Using Conus shell for it's body, she then used that as the pivot to create the art that sits within & along the perimeter where she used a channel inlay of all sorts of different colored stones/shells! All the mosaic is then inlaid atop of a black jet backing.
THE 2 STRAND TURQUOISE BEADED NECKLACE:
Completely cut by hand, the necklace is made with 2 super long strands of bright blue Kingman turquoise.. Due to Mary's popularity & the inability at times to do everything completely by herself anymore in order to get orders out, it now has become a family operation with everyone having a role from beginning to end.Mary however, will ALWAYS lay out the materials that are then mosaic inlaid, while the cutting of the beads she will share at times with her Award winner husband Lorenzo, who is a master cutter.. (As well as a gold/silversmith!) These particular beads are cut by Lorenzo, who cut the beads where they get smaller at the closure..He then hand drills each & every bead. The strands are threaded through bales on the backside & the design is finalized with Mary's hand made Kingman turquoise cones that then end with a larger sized sterling hook & eye that act as the closure.
More than many of Mary's other necklaces ,this definitely is a conversational piece & a real "stop you in your tracks" necklace!!Guaranteed you will hear the "ooh's & aah's with this one! Her pieces are always funky-fun-whimsical & happy that in turn can only bring a smile to the person's face that wears them! They're the epitome of 'WEARABLE ART' that can be treasured & passed on for a lifetime!
The wonderful thing about owning Mary's jewelry is for the fact that you can pair any of her pieces together, regardless that they may not be the same, because it’s the ‘LOOK’ that matches & is a look signature to her! Try pairing her pieces, not with the same color, but watch how they come to life by wearing them against other colors of your wardrobe!

A LITTLE ABOUT MARY:
Called the "Picasso" of Native American jewelry, this colorful Pueblo folk art artist has taken Kewa jewelry to a whole new level in design & has a style all her own! Many don't know, but when Mary began, she was of course influenced by her parents & stayed very traditional & creating pieces just like many others. Step forward to the 90's & it was then that her husband Lorenzo said "Let's try something different" & was during this time her "Abstract Folk Art' style grew to what it is today. The great thing with "Abstract Art" is that each person will see something different & it's all in how your mind & eyes see it....
Never planning the design before hand, her art takes shape as she starts to make the piece & her art can be so abstract to where she doesn't attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality, but instead Mary will use various cut shapes, different colors that then take their form to achieve the effect she wants. (for example, when she uses her Conus shell) Never knowing how a piece will turn out & how it turns out,can never be repeated, since her jewelry pieces are literally one of a kind-pieces of art!!
Her phenomenal colorful art can be found across the country & in Museums.
