Louis Nizer Signed Letter 1942 / US Attny General Re: Social Justice Publication:
$199.00

Letter of great historical reference during WWII. Famed trial lawyer Louis Nizer signed autographed letter typed on the letterhead of Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin & Krim, the firm in which he was Senior Partner, made to US Attorney General Honorable Francis offerdle. On behalf of himself and his firm, he commends offerdle on the action taken against such publications as “Social Justice,” making reference to their “…subversive nature.” He also writes, “It is rarely that we write to burden public officials, but we think you should know that the patriotic citizens, though not always as articulate as the subversive minorities, are grateful for you action.”

The letter’s content refers to action taken by offerdle to bar the publication “Social Justice” from the US mail, on grounds it jeopardized the war effort as it openly lauded Axis gains while disparaging the war aims of the Allies. The provisions of the Espionage Act of 1917 were cited in making the actual case. Social Justice was spawned by Charles Coughlin, an influential and popular priest who also led radio broadcasts with antisemetic and pro-Nazi political overtones.

At one time, Nizer was considered the highest paid attorney in the country. Among his clients were many celebrities including Johnny Carson and Salvador Dali. He also wrote the forward to the Doubleday publication of the Warren Report, on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The 8.5 X 11 oilskin letter is in good condition with a filing staple mark in the upper left corner.
