Single folio leaf, a partially printed contract, in Spanish on one side and Chinese on the other, on light blue laid bond paper for Ha Hoe, 20 years of age from Yang-Ping, China. Signed by Portuguese agents. Ha Hoe has signed three times with his Chinese "chop". Dated Whampoa, China (Huangpu, China) , 7 March, 1859. From 1847 to 1874 approximately 125,000 Chinese laborers were imported to Cuba. The abolition of slavery created an entirely new and very profitable business, once again dominated by the British and Portuguese. The former ran the actual business while the Portuguese with their colony in Macau, China supplied the people. Dimensions : 9 7/8" x 15 15/16". Condition is very fine with a few tiny worm holes almost un-noticable. Fold lines with some light handling. Condition is consistent with its 162 years.
