A little background info on the Nebraska's Furnas Arboretum Statue & Robert Furnas:Robert Furnas 1824-1905 was born & raised near Troy, Ohio. In 1856 Furnas moved from his farm in Ohio to a 100 acre farm in Brownville, Nebraska where he lived with his wife & 8 children. The Wheel Museum in Brownville houses a vast array of artifacts from the 1800s, with a number of them relating to agriculture, including an exhibit devoted to Robert W. Furnas, a farmer, soldier, postmaster, and tinsmith who first began publishing the "Nebraska Farmer"in Brownville back in the late 1860's.Nebraska is known for having less fertile Loess soil referred to locally as "sugar clay" which happens to be an ideal soil for orchards and vineyards.Robert Furnas was instrumental in establishing apple & grape production in the region, as well as growing the state's very first Alfalfa in his own front yard in 1871. By 1873 Robert was serving as the second governor of Nebraska and helped Legislator Julius Sterling Morton (creator of the Board of Agriculture in 1872) establish Arbor Day by petitioning legislature to make it a legal holiday in 1874. Arbor Day continued to celebrated on April 10th each year with increasing interest until it was officially made a legal holiday in 1885.
