Born in 1803 in Le Locle, Henri Grandjean was a watchmaker, manufacturer of pocket watches, marine chronometers and small and large chimes. He also leads a career as a politician.

He is best known for being the founder of the Swiss Marine Chronometer Industry, in partnership with watchmakers Ulysse Nardin and Louis JeanRichard. A member of the prestigious Grandjean Perrenoud Comtesse family of watchmakers, from the Sagne Valley and Ponts-de-Martel, it was almost inevitable for Henri Grandjean to work in the world of high-end watchmaking.

After completing an apprenticeship in the watchmaking trade in his region, he went to Brazil in 1824 to manage the watch counters that his father had created there. He then took the opportunity to visit many Latin American countries. He finally returned to Le Locle in 1830 and married the following year with Élise Montandon. The Neuchâtel adventureBack in Le Locle, Henri Grandjean devoted himself to precision chronometry and began building his first marine chronometer. Very quickly, he made many of them as well as marine watches. His creations are submitted to the Observatory of Neuchâtel and a large part of them obtain first rank walking certificates. His fame grew and, in 1856, he was made a foreign member of the Institute of United Arts in London. In 1858, he founded a Neuchâtel committee for the improvement of watchmaking. A leading player in his region, Henri Grandjean is at the origin of the Progrès district in Le Locle and was also the promoter of the construction of the observatory located in Neuchâtel. A spirit always turned towards progress, he is also known for having ardently defended the installation of the industrial Jura railway line.By following the link you will know almost everything about this great Swiss watchmaker
