SURVIVOR TALMUD 1948 WW2 PRINTED BY THE USA ARMY IN MUNICH : A FAMILY/COMMUNITY/MUSEUM HEIRLOOM
Description
After liberation from the concentration camps, the resumption of Jewish life required publishing the essential texts of Judaism. Among the works printed was the 19 volumes “Survivor’s Talmud.” It is an especially attractive edition. The title page depicts an idyllic Land of Israel above an image of barbed wire surrounding a work camp. The text of the title page, in red and black, is printed against a gold background. This Talmud has a dedication in English, which states:
This edition of the Talmud is dedicated to the United States Army. This army played a major role in the rescue of the Jewish people from total annihilation, and after the defeat of Hitler bore the major burden of sustaining the DPs of the Jewish faith. This special edition of the Talmud published in the very land where, but a short time ago, everything Jewish and of Jewish inspiration was anathema, will remain a symbol of the indestructibility of the Torah. The Jewish DPs will never forget the generous impulses and the unprecedented humanitarianism of the American forces, to whom they owe so much.
In the name of the Rabbinical Organization
Rabbi Samuel A. Snieg
Chairman and Chief Rabbi of the U. S. Zone
The impetus for this Talmud began with a request by a delegation of rabbis, all survivors and led by R. Samuel Jacob Rose, to General Joseph McNarney, commander of the American zone in Germany, for a new edition of the Talmud. General McNarney was sympathetic, and, with the assistance of General Lucien Truscott and General Lucius Clay, publication commenced despite a shortage of paper and the lack of a complete Talmud in Germany. Two sets were brought from New York and the edition was printed at the Carl Winter Printing Plant in Heidelberg, which had previously printed Nazi propaganda. Only 700sets were printed! (This is known according to the biography of Rabbi Rose which I have.) It is the sole instance of a national government (under US Army Auspices) publishing the Talmud.
It is dedicated to the “United States Army,” which provided the opportunity and the means for its publication. Shown below is the title page of this extraordinary work, which connects the Holocaust with the hoped for rebirth of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. At the bottom of the title page is a depiction of a Nazi slave labor camp flanked by barbed wire; above are the palm trees and the landscape of the Holy Land. The legend reads: “From bondage to freedom; from darkness to a great light.”
