GJPawsales is very pleased to offera stunninglybeautiful woven raffia Tcaka or Dance Skirt from the Kuba People, DemocraticRepublic of Congo, Central Africa. The Kuba Kingdom was created in the 17thcentury when 19 separate ethnic groups were united under one king. A central group, the Bushoong, was thedominant group and to a certain extent imposed its own cultural characteristicsand language upon the others. The life of the Kuba is organized in minutedetail from the family level to the political sphere, which consists of a unionof chiefdoms recognizing the authority of the “Nym,” the ruler of the Bushoong group. Each chiefdom is independent inits internal affairs, and almost independent in external affairs. The kingdom’sforces of cohesion are military supremacy, tradition, spiritual respect, androyal patronage of the arts. Collectively, all art forms produced by theKuba peoples can be considered “court art.” Kuba design is most famous for itsunique "visual script," a linear geometric design which is bothrepetitive and unique at the same time.Kuba cloth begins its life as theleaf of the raffia palm tree before it is transformed into the kingdom’s mostvisible form of wealth, status, and finery. The transformation from leaf totextile is easy to understand, but difficult to execute. Discarded leaves aregathered, dried, softened, dyed, and stripped down to individual fibers beforebeing woven into panels or strips that are then embroidered. All of thisis a collaborative effort between Kuba artisans, but teamwork isn’t what makesKuba cloth so valuable and collectible. Instead, it is the stunningabstract geometric designs embroidered on the finished cloth. There arenumerous theories as to how Kuba style came about. One theory suggests itis based on tribal scarification patterns. Another suggests the impetusfor Kuba design can be found in crop patterns, as the Kuba are primarilyfarmers. And yet another suggests this type of visual language is the result ofdivine intervention. Regardless of the origins of this design, theelaborate surface decoration of Kuba textiles is considered one of the mostdistinguished art forms on the entire African continent. This superb example is a danceskirt. It measures 96 inches in width by 108 inches in length (243.8 cm by 274.3 cm). The design is one-of-a-kind; the patina of the cloth is soft and pleasing; and its further transformation from wrap to tapestry gives it new life as meaningful adornment for the wall as opposed to the body. It is in very good condition. A fabulous collector's item, it comes from an important Midwest collection of African art. Guaranteed authentic, it should be a welcome addition to any collection of African art.
