THERE IS A SMALL BOOKLET TELLING THE STORY THE SITKA′S CARVING FIGURINE.
THERE IS ALSO THE STORY OF THE TLINGIT THAT RESIDED ALONG THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF ALASKA IN PERMANENT SETTLEMENTS PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. THEY LIVED IN LARGE EXTENDED FAMILIES(CLANS) AND SHARED COMMUNAL, CEDAR WOOD HOUSES. IN FRONT OF THESE ″LINEAGE″ HOUSES, TOTEM POLES WERE PLANTED, DISPLAYING THE CREST OF EACH CLAN.
THE TLINGIT ARE PROLIFIC ARTISTS WITH A STRONGSENSE OF DESIGN AS SHOWN BY THEIR BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF CARVED WOOD, BONE AND STONE, AS WELL AS BY THEIR WEAVING, BASKET MAKING, AND CEREMONIAL ART. MASTER ARTISTS TAUGHT YOUNG APPRENTICES HOW TO CARVE AND PAINT TOTEM POLES, MASKS, AND RELIEF MURALS. THIS UNBROKEN TRADITION CONTINUES TO THIS DAY.
THE OCEAN WAS AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF FOOD, CLOTHING, AND TOOLS FOR THE TLINGIT. CEDAR TREES ROM THE SURROUNDING RAIN FORESTS PROVIDED WOOD FOR HOUSING, CLOTHING, BASKETS, AND CEREMONIAL NEEDS. CEDAR WAS ALSO THE PRIMARY MATERIAL FOR CANOES—A VITAL MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. THE TLINGIT TRAVELED GREAT DISTANCE BY CANOE, NOT ONLY OUT TO SEA, BUT DOWN THE COASTLINE AS FAR SOUTH AS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

SCULPTED TO REPRESENT THE TLINGIT PEOPLE SITKA′S CARVING DEPICTS A YOUNG BOY SITTING BY THE WATER AND HAPPILY CARVING A PIECE OF WOOD. PERHAPS ONE DAY HE WILL BE AS EXPERT A CARVER AS THE PERSON WHO MADE THE TOTEM POLE BEHIND HIM! THE BOY′S FAITHFUL PUP IS RIGHT BESIDEHIM READY TO LAP UP SOME WATER. THE DETAIL IN THIS SCULPTURE MAKES ITA A SPECIAL PIECE. THE ″WATER″ IS MADE OF A TYPE OF SHELLAC, GIVING IT A SHINY, REALISTIC LOOK AND THE TOTEM POLE IS FULL OR REALISTIC DETAIL. THIS SCENE SIT A TOP A WOODEN BASE.
THE BASE OF THIS SCULPTURE MEASURES APPROXIMATELY 8-1/4″ X 6-1/4″.THE SCULPTED FIGURINE STANDS APPROXIMATELY 8″ TALL.
