The Serpa Pinto arrived the prior day carrying 51 children sponsored by the The US Committee for Care of European Children, with help fromthe Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), the Society of Friends (Quakers). THE SS SERPA PINTO set sail from Lisbon, Portugal on September 9, 1941 and arrived New York September 24, 1941. The SS Serpa Pinto played a significant role in rescuing Jews and other European refugees from fascist Europe. For the children transported on this ship the sea journey was often the final leg of years of travel to safety.

Leo Lieb was a staff photographer for the PM Daily Newspaper, a left leaning newspaper sponsored by Marshall Fields from Chicago. Also on staff at the time were Margaret Bourke-White, Weegee,James Thurber, and Dorothy Parker.

A newspaper clipping of this image and accompanying article in the PM Daily are in the The Collections of the United States Holocaust Museum, donated to the Museum by one of the passenger children.
