Shipboard newspapers were ubiquitous with United States Warships during World War Two yet are relatively scarce artifacts of war. These issues were published on board the USS Auburn near the end of the war yet in the midst of battle for Iwo Jima which raged in March 1945.

The Auburn was launched in October 1943 and commissioned July 1944. Almost immediately she set sail for the Pacific arriving at Pearl Harbor in September of 44. By early February 1945 ship personnel were preparing for the attack on Iwo Jima. During the battle for Iwo Jima, the Auburn directed the movements of several hundred ships attached to Amphibious Group 2.

The by-line for the March 4th issue states, "Iwo Jima's First American Newspaper." The March 16, 1945 issue states, "This one-time enemy bastion officially became American Territory on the 14th of March with the formal unfurling of the stars and stripes and the delivery of a proclamation issues by fleet admiral Chester W. Nimitz." The ship remained off Iwo Jima until the 27th of March, then sailing back to Pearl Harbor. This collection also contains issues from March 17 and 19, plus September 15 and 21.

The Auburn Press included war news, ship news plus headlines and articles from home. The paper received Camp Newspaper Service material and was a member of SEA, Ship's Editorial Association. Issues usually also contained a humorous item or comic with the final page devoted to a crossword puzzle. Circulation was 700.

We only find one institution, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Library holding any issues of this scarce paper, nor did we find any sale records.
