X-MEN EPIC RUN MINT 99 ISSUES BENDIS READ DESCRIPTION ALL-NEW & UNCANNY MINT:
This collects Brian Michael Bendis’ entire epic run on the X-MEN titles, telling the thrilling story of the 5 original X-Men bringing brought into the present day where they join the modern day team & interact with their present day counterparts, now grieving the death of the their father figure & team founder Charles Xavier, one of the casualties of the X-Men’s recent war with the Avengers. The issues are presented in their reading order as several of the series crossover in several events.
The lot begins with ALL-NEW X-MEN #1-16, which details the teenaged versions of the Original Five (Jean Grey, Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, & Angel) being brought to the present day & joining forces with the modern day team as they deal with the fallout of their recent battle with the Avengers.
The All-New X-Men then take part in a three part crossover with THE INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK & THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN titled THE ARMS OF THE OCTOPUS, a stand alone story that takes place over the annuals from each series.
Then we have UNCANNY X-MEN #1-11, Brian Michael Bendis’ other Flagship X-Book that acts as a sister title to ALL-NEW X-MEN, following the adult present day Cyclops as he and his supporters remain fugitives following the murder of Charles Xavier. This title follows them as they build their own rival mutant school while they remain on the run from their former teammates as well as the Avengers.
These X-Books then crossover for the first time in X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM, an epic ten part crossover that features the X-Men from the far future coming to the present to make sure the original Five are sent back to their proper timeline, resulting in a war with the X-Men of the modern day.
Then we jump back to ALL-NEW X-MEN for issues 18-21 which deals with the fallout from BATTLE OF THE ATOM & also leads into the next event, which is an epic crossover with the popular superhero team the Guardians of the Galaxy entitled THE TRIAL OF JEAN GREY. Taking place over these two main titles, the event is six parts & shows the original five being abducted by an alien empire who puts Jean Grey on trial for crimes her older self committed. Soon the team encounters the space pirates/renegade heroes known as the Guardians & the two teams join forces to save each other.
Then we have the landmark 25th issue of ALL-NEW X-MEN that acts as an anthology & features a rotating cast of artists for each character that gets depicted. It’s truly amazing. Then we have issues 26-37 which feature several stand alone storylines that eventually connect to the larger ones at play, including the fallout from THE TRIAL OF JEAN GREY, the return of the future X-Men team from BATTLE OF THE ATOM, & a an arc featuring Miles Morales, the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE Spider-Man as the young X-Men find themselves stranded in his universe, encountering alternate versions of themselves along the way.
Then we have another space-set epic crossover with the ALL-NEW X-MEN & the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, also crossing over with CAPTAIN MARVEL, NOVA, & other space themed heroes. Titled THE BLACK VORTEX, the epic 12 part crossover continues plot points from the previous space crossover as the young mutants & the other heroes are brought into direct conflict with one another after the mysterious titular BLACK VORTEX is discovered, an ancient mirror-like relic that grants destructive power to whoever enters it.
Then we have the final issue of ALL-NEW X-MEN that I collected, issue #40 which includes the now iconic & still controversial “coming out” scene for Iceman, a scene decades in the building that changed the entire character forever. It’s beautiful. Sadly I stopped collecting right at this time so issues #41 & 42 are not included but they are incredibly easy to find.
Next we continue with the issues of UNCANNY X-MEN that followed the BATTLE OF THE ATOM, #14-17 which feature Cyclops & his fugitive team seeking out more of the new mutants appearing all around the globe as well as continuing the storyline with the villainous Mystique who has been operating in the background since the beginning of this entire run in ALL-NEW X-MEN.
We then have a 2 part storyline centered around one of Cyclops’ young recruits, Eva Bell, & her powerful time traveling abilities. Taking place over the annuals from each title, the storyline shows Eva traveling to the past & the distant future, witnessing things that make her begin to doubt the man leading her & her young friends.
Then we have a stand-alone issue with #18 followed by a three part crossover with the Uncanny Team & Nova & Iron Man…the first two issues are collected but sadly I never bought the third issue.
Then rounding out this epic collection is UNCANNY X-MEN issues #19-33, featuring several storylines including Mystique’s further schemes, the X-men’s war with SHIELD, a falling out between Cyclops & Magneto, the epic Matthew Malloy storyline that featured the X-Men fighting a character with power over the very fabric of reality…also included is THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF CHARLES XAVIER which features the renegade team coming into contact with their former friends & family members in order to hear the will of their deceased father figure.
Like with ALL-NEW X-MEN’s final two issues, I sadly stopped collecting before I finished these series…so in order to have the complete set you would need to find issues 34, 35, & 600, which acted as the oversized finale issue to Bendis’ entire run.
This lot is an X-Fan’s dream, collecting 99!! Issues in mint condition.
