NAVARRA REGIMENT SPANISH COLONIAL COPPER ALLOY BUTTON 16MM VENEZUELA MEXICO:
$39.99

From a fortunate find by a metal detectorist is this late Spanish Colonial period uniform cuff button for the Navarra Regiment - a copper alloy example with \"26 / NAVARRA\". This general style of button was adopted by regulation in 1816, eventually replacing the old 1805 variety (as stocks of those dried up) throughout the Spanish Army - then continuing in use until replaced again around 1823 or so. The regiment (No. 28 in 1815) was re-numbered \"26\" as on this button in 1818, making this the style employed after most of regiment was ordered \"Ultramar\" and sent for service in America. The number was changed again to Battalions no. 51 and 52 in 1823, providing a firm terminal date for use. All that said, there is some confusion in the references regarding exactly where this regiment was sent. A portion was definitely sent to Costa Firme, to Cumana in Venezuela to counter the aspirations of Simon Bolivar. These troops were involved in several named battles, including El Sombrero on the Caracas Road in 1818. Some may also have served in New Spain - both William Davis Robinson in his \"Memoirs of the Mexican Revolution\" ( a reminiscence of Francisco Xavier Mina\'s filibuster incursion into Mexico) and David Marley\'s Mexico at War\" mention a Navarra Battalion present in 1817. Whatever that case the unit is well associated with significant events and localities during the Spanish American Wars of Independence. Condition is quite good for a field find though not absolutely pristine perfect, with some expected wear to the surfaces from ground action. Devices are clear and strong. The shank is present, a rather uncommon bonus. In all, just enough \"salt\" for visual charisma and as evidence it genuinely saw the elephant. Size is about 16mm. I\'m not sure what else to say, so there you are.
