DRAGOONS SMALL FRAMED ANTIQUE ADVERTISING SIGN ~ CIRCA 1890s - EARLY 1900s

The vintage wooden frame is 11 7/8” x 9 3/8”. The advertising image is8 3/8” x 6 3/8”. The Putnam Dye trademark advertising date from the 1890s tothe early 1900’s and is mounted under glass. The cardboard advertising has 2marks were staples were removed, a few scattered white spots, and some creasesand edge tears at the upper left corner. Overall, this piece displays well, andminor imperfections to the cardboard advertising is to be expected. This piece has a clip at the back thatappears to be to hold a string or nail head to mount on the wall.

In 1876, E. N. Monroe opened the Monroe Drug Company. Anastute businessman, Monroe prospered, selling numerous items besides drugs,including wallpaper, paint, coal oil, and gasoline, plus his own Black DiamondHeadache Cure.Monroe hired J. Hugh Elson in the early 1890s, a pharmacist interested indeveloping a synthetic dye that could be used on various fabrics. Elson\'sproduct went on the market in 1893 and the company stopped selling drugs andother goods in 1895 to concentrate solely upon marketing and selling PutnamFadeless Dyes. The company\'s success was directly attributable to itsadvertising, production, and distribution controls. Easily recognizable, itslogo featured a painting of Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam (for whomthe county is named) fleeing the British. Israel Putnam, popularly known as \"Old Put\", was anAmerican army general officer who fought with distinction at the Battle ofBunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War. He also served notably as anofficer with Rogers\' Rangers during the French and Indian War, when he wascaptured by Mohawk warriors. He was saved from the ritual burning given toenemies by the intervention of a French officer with whom the Mohawk wereallied.
