Item 483999 ◊ ca 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card for Clark\'s O.T.N. Cotton Thread. This advertising Trade Card for George A. Clark, sole agent, measures 3\" x 4 1/2\". The back of the card states \"In White, Fast Black, and Bright Colors. Sold everywhere.\" The front of the card depicts a colored man sitting on a large spool of Clark\'s spool cotton thread at the edge of a lake. He is using the thread as fishing line for a fishing pole and is giving it a tug to test how strong it is, he says \"I reckon dis yere\'s strong \'nuff suah.\" This rare and wonderful \"ca 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card for Clark\'s O.T.N. Cotton Thread.\" is printed on a nice heavy-weight paper, which was very typical at the time. Which is good, because this beautiful Chromolithograph of a colored man fishing deserves to be printed on the best. It is an original (not a copy) and in excellent condition. The printing is dark and vibrant and the sheet is clean and crisp with some no creasing, no age toning, and only mild damage to the corners. The back however, looks as if some flour paste was used on it, possibly to put it in a scrap book. In addition the card is slightly bowed.Wow! It makes me want to run out and buy some boots.

Very rare and unusual, \"ca 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card for Clark\'s O.N.T. Cotton Thread.\"  This advertising Trade Card for George A. Clark, sole agent, measures 3\" x 4-1/2\".  The back of the card states \"In White, Fast Black, and Bright Colors.   Sold everywhere.\"

The front of the card depicts a colored man sitting on a large spool of Clark\'s spool cotton thread at the edge of a lake.  He is using the thread as fishing line for a fishing pole and is giving it a tug to test how strong it is, he says \"I reckon dis yere\'s strong \'nuff suah.\"

You might be wondering, what O.N.T. stands for.  In 1806, Napoleon blockaded Great Britain, which meant that silk thread was not available to British weavers. The Clark family had a loom supply company and they were also big suppliers of silk thread. At the time of the blockade, Peter Clark developed a method of combining cotton threads so that they were strong and smooth enough to be used in place of silk, and he advertised this important advancement as \"Our New Thread.\"

This rare and wonderful \"ca 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card for Clark\'s O.N.T. Cotton Thread.\"  is printed on a nice heavy-weight paper, which was very typical at the time.  Which is good, because this beautiful Chromolithograph of a colored man fishing deserves to be printed on the best.   It is an original (not a copy) and in excellent condition. there is bend (an incomplete crease) in the upper right-hand corner, and a tiny amount of age toning on the back.  However Chromolithograph printing is beautiful;  dark and vibrant, and the sheet is clean and crisp with, and little to no edge wear or corner wear.  The back has some mild glue residue, possibly from being stored in a scrap book.  In addition the card is slightly bowed.  (Please see all of the photos above.)
