Signatures from the historical female civil rights activists, framed to an overall size of 33x21½
Signatures: \"Rosa Parks\" and \"Coretta Scott King\", 4½x3. In December 1955, ROSA PARKS\' refusal to relinquish her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white man led to the first major boycott organized by Blacks. At the helm of the boycott was Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had married CORETTA SCOTT KING (1927-2006) two years earlier in June 1953. Parks\' action and King\'s reaction spurred the integration of public transportation, and Parks and Mrs. King continued to work for Civil Rights and opportunities for Blacks despite facing seemingly overwhelming obstacles. Both Parks and her husband Raymond lost their jobs and were targets of harassment and threats. The couple, who moved to Detroit in August 1957, were unable to find jobs in their first year there, but Mrs. Parks later became involved with the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development to provide guidance for young Blacks (1987). Mrs. Parks (1913-2005) was honored with the Spingarn Medal (1970), the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award (1980), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1996) and the Congressional Gold Medal (1999). Mrs. King, an ardent supporter of her husband\'s work, endured threats, bombings and the 1968 assassination of her husband. After his death, she became a dynamic Civil Rights leader and crusader for peace in her own right, leading the 20th anniversary March on Washington (1983) and speaking out for the rights of Blacks in America and in South Africa. In 1969, Mrs. King founded the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, which carries on Dr. King\'s teachings of nonviolent social protest. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 33x21½.
