Late 1930\'s Swan Japan Urushi Chestnut Tame-Nuri Fountain Pen- NOS

Pre-war red-brown chestnut tame-nuri urushi in new old stock condition. From Swan Japan, the first Japanese fountain pen maker. A beautiful vest style example from one of Japan\'s historic early makers.

Before Japan\'s Big 3 (Pilot, Platinum and Sailor), pre-war Japan was dominated by Swan Japan. Holding a 60% market share (no relation to Mabie Todd). Unfortunately, the Swan plant was destroyed during the war and today Swan pens are considered extremely scarce, especially in new old stock condition.

The book \"Fountain Pens of Japan\" by Lambrou and Sunami has a chapter dedicated to Swan\'s lustrouspre-war history.

In terms of urushi, red and it\'s variantswere a much more difficult colors to make in the early days. The large majority of pens made before 1960 were black. This fountain pen for sale, in semi-transparent red-brown chestnut urushi over black, is rarer still.

Tame-nuri is quintessentiallyJapanese. Beauty in subtlety. Designed to expose the natural form. Looking closely at the pen, you can see the black urushi peeking out at both ends and around the barrel threads. The burgundy against black gives the pen a delicate sense of Asian sophistication. While subtle, you find yourself getting lost admiring the glossy layers. Almost looks as though its rich milk-chocolate.

As mentioned, the fountain pen is in fantastic New Old Stock condition. Only sign of its age is a small oxidation spot along the ribbed cap band on the backside. Though very hard to see (Photo #4). There is also one small line of black urushi exposed towards the bottom of the barrel (Photo #9). There is no sign of wear and likely there since the urushi application process.

The Swan stamped nib features a wonderful swan logo. While the nib does not have the gold content marked, it does not react to magnetized objects. There is also no sign of plating. I believe the nib is 14K, though it is not documented. The nib is in pristine unused condition.

This burgundy tame-nuri urushi pen from Swan Japan is truly a stunning piece of Japanese fountain pen history. Similar designs from Namiki and Nakaya can be found today pay homage to this beautiful design. But not at this value or with this history. It will make a perfect addition to your fountain pen collection.
