CHARMING ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE MARX MERRY MAKERS WITH MARQUEE..CIRCA 1931. 6 ½” LONG X 8 ¾” HIGH. SECOND RAREST OF THE FOUR VARIATIONS.

1. One of Marx’s best toys, the Merrymakers toy is a mouse band.

2. One mouse rocks back and forth as he plays the upright piano. To the left, another mouse beats a drum. Reminiscent of the Marx jigger toys, a third mouse dances at the pianist’s right. A fourth mouse, which came in two variations, sits on top of the piano.

3. In one variation, the mouse waves a baton as his arms move out and down, while in a second variation, the mouse plays a fiddle.

4. The piano has a start/stop lever.

5. The Merrymakers toy is decorated completely in red, white, and black. The mice are nattily attired in black coats, black and white high-button shoes, white shirts and gloves, and red waistcoats. All have wire-thin arms and legs.

6. The piano is decorated with lithographed, full-figure mice, and the two chairs are decorated with the heads of cats.

7. The Merrymakers came with or without an illustrated, moon-shaped backdrop which fits into the piano back. The backdrop is illustrated with two mice dancing while a cat plays the tuba.

8. Lettering above the dancing mice reads “Merry Makers”, but the back of the piano has lettering that reads, “Merrymakers” as one word.

9. There are four variations of the Merrymakers toy. The toy I am selling is the second rarest of the four.

10. The toy works well and is in excellent condition. See pictures, please. Has just the right patina. Has no box but there are reproductions for approx. $20.
