A unique gathering as a quality from all our southern states were represented, but face vessels stole the spotlight. From the turn of the 19th into the 20th century came these facial pieces. The vernacular torso jug from Alabama was eye opening. Georgia’s Crawford County’s one of a kind signed and dated Merritt piece was well received, face jugs from Gillsville with Charlie Ferguson Sr. was exciting coupled with one of his son’s face heads really drew attention and historically profound, White county’s L. Q. face piece was the icing on the cake, also a glazed Arie Meaders face jug, then reinforced with premium Lanier Meaders forms. North Carolinas western area by Buncombe paraded two spectacular O. L. Bachelder forms as well important Pisgah Forest and a Brown’s Pottery early face piece, Catawba Valley held its ground with gorgeous and highly praised Seagle and Hartsoe forms, rare Hilton family pieces, B. B. Craig offered excellent pieces. The Carolina Piedmont showcased some good redware forms, salt glaze Fox beauty’s, and a rare N. H. Dixon ring jug, a rare J. D. and T. W. Craven form some interesting cobalt blue decorative forms, wonderful art pottery finds, and an unusual grouping of Billy Hussey elevated with these two large colorful cats, South Carolina’s “cradle of alkaline glazes” offered several slave made wares and makers as well uncommon attributed Dave Drake forms, great Rhodes and Chandler decorative pieces, and even an Otto Brown face jug rounded out this states representatives. An excellent catalog to compliment our southern collector especially the unique facial icons found here.
