#34-Antique Souvenir Spoon- The Columbian Exposition was also known as the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. It commemorated Christopher Columbus\' Voyage to the New World. See below for facts regarding the expo. This spoon has a very detailed scrolling floral handle and etched bowl with the Machinery Hall on it. The back has a simpler floral design with a engraving and dated, the back also shows the Reed and Barton Mark and is marked sterling Very unusual spoon-great for any collection
The Expo was known for several major attractions and events.
The fair actually helped rebuild Chicago after the devastating fire 20 years before.
Food items such as Cream of Wheat, Juicy Fruit gum and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer made their debut. Early prototype versions of thedishwasher and fluorescent light bulbs were alsoon display.
The country’s first postcards and commemorative stamps and two new commemorative coins: a quarter and half dollar were issued by the U.S. government.
A 264-foot-tall wheel engineered by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. was an engineering marvel and rivaled the height of the Eiffel Tower. It could fit 2,160 people at a time, and cost 50 cents to ride. Entrance to the fair was only 25 cent. It was so popular that it actually saved the fair from financial ruin.
It was the first exposition to have national pavilions. Nearly 50 foreign countries and 43 states and territories were represented in Chicago.
