A Valentine\'s Day Card that was \"not\" full of love or adoration dating back to the 1850\'s and known as Vinegar Valentine\'s or Penny Dreadfuls as they only cost 1ยข. They were produced from very inexpensive paper and were poorly printed.The artwork was uncomplicated using only the primary colors of red blue and yellow with verses of humorous and rhyming insults most likely sent anonymously. In the 1800\'s the receiver was the person who paid for the postage so these poor individuals paid to be insulted. Popular until the mid 1900\'s.
This lot of 4 cards contain Shipping Clerk, Crossed-eyed Ape (has a small fold on top tight corner), Frankenstien and Dracula and 21 Inch Eyeball. Each card is approximately 8 1/4\" x 5 1/2.\" Obtained frominventory/stock in the 1980\'s when my grandparents country store was sold. All are in excellent unused condition with no stains, tears or writing but with some yellowing of the paper. Please see actual photos for details.
