You are offerding on a very rareSet Of 6 Hanovarian Pattern Colonial Era Coin Silver Spoons By Silversmith Thomas Grant Marblehead MA 1760\'s. The spoons are monogramed B. I. H. They are possibly coffee or desert spoons.The pattern, known as \"Hanovarian\", with the rounded terminals and the ends that turn upwards date these to no later than the 1770s and probably more likely the 1750s or 1760s , which marked an important transition that happened in England, and a little later in the American Colonies, when etiquette required that spoons be placed on the table with the open bowl facing upwards, rather than facing downwards as had been the tradition up till then. This also marked a time when the crest or initials migrated to the (now) top side of the handle so they could be seen. In short, this set dates to the old-fashioned era when spoons were laid bowl downward and so the initials would show, along with the shell back design which again, was fashionable during that 1750 - 1770 range. So these are a very early set for America and understand that I can find no examples of a full set of 6 available anywhere.Thomas Grant (1729 - 1804) was active from 1752 until his death in 1804. He fought in the Revolutionary War as a captain in Col. John Glover\'s Regiment and a story goes that a schooner belonging to Grant was requisitioned by none other than George Washington himself for military use, so this silversmith was certainly aman of stature in hiscommunity.
Condition:Silver in the bowls have visible thinning, dings, the shells are rubbed and the bowl tips a little withered. Every spoon has a visible makersmark except for one spoon in which the mark hasworn away. Please view the pictures to confirm their condition. Thank you for visiting our store.
