(9) ANTIQUE WEDGWOOD ETRURIA FLOW BLUE PLATE SET 9.25\" Birth of America 1902-03

A rare set to find together, here are (9) antiqueWedgwood Etruria flow blue plates commemorating the birth of America, datingfrom 1902 to 1903, with one from 1905. Each measures 9 ¼ in. diameter and isin overall excellent condition, anomalies noted per plate below, flow bluepattern slightly darker on some than others, transfer misses here and thereinherent to make. All have “Wedgwood” and the three-letter date/finishercode incised on verso with several marks in blue. All have a “Sole Importers/Jones McDuffee & Stratton Company/ [lion with globe]/ Boston” mark andeither “Copyright 1900/ JMcD & SCo” or “Copyright JMcD & SCo/ 1899” and “Wedgwood/Etruria/ England.” Most have the date mark“F” for 1903, except “The Battle on Lexington Common” which has an “E” for1902, and “Priscilla and John Alden” which is marked with an “H” for 1905. Theseexhibit very well and would make an amazing wall display. .

1) “Birthof the American Flag” featuring an interior scene of the Betsy and George Rosshome, depicting the Ross’s presenting the first American Flag to GeorgeWashington, the names of those present written in script underneath, “Gen.Washington, George Ross, Robert Morris,” signed by the print artist,“J.A. Hagstrom, 1897,” generous rose floral border and dot pattern embellishedrim, a ribbon wreath enclosed cartouche at bottom center rim with an image ofthe Ross House exterior and the words, “The Betsy Ross House/ in which the/ FirstAmerican Flag/ was made/ Adopted By Congress/ June 14, 1777,” with “[Phila” tothe side. Marked on verso with blue seals and importers marks, with theplate title, “Birth Of The American Flag.” Excellent condition, small amount ofwhite paint residue on reverse where leaned against a cabinet or wall, one oldtiny nibble in underneath rim, light crazing, no blemishes, hairlines, or otherissues.

2) “SantaBarbara Mission” featuring the mission exterior and grounds with shrubs, fence,and fountain, mountains and clouds, the generous rose floral border framing thescene, with traditional dot pattern embellished rim. Marked on verso withblue seals and importers marks, with the plate title and note, “Santa BarbaraMission/ Built 1766/ Show & Hunt/ Santa Barbara, California.” Excellentcondition, no chips, nibbles, or hairlines, light crazing, tiny manufacturefold in center of image, no blemishes or flaws.

3) “GeorgeWashington,” here depicted after the famous Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) “The Athenaeum”portrait of Washington, appearing on theUnited States one-dollarbillfor over a centuryand on variousU.S. postagestampsof the 19th and early 20th century. It is framed with thetraditional leafy rose border and dot patterned rim, excellent condition, lightcrazing, one tiny old nibble at rim reverse, unnoticeable, all else blemishfree. Marked on verso with blue seals and importers marks, with the plate titleand notations, “George Washington/ 1732-1799,”“Soldier and statesman,rarestunison, High-poised example of great duties done. James Russell Lowell,” and “Americahas furnished to the world the character of Washington! And if our American institutions had done nothing else, that alone would have entitled them tothe respect of mankind.” Daniel Webster at the Completion of the Bunker HillMonument.\"

4) “WashingtonCrossing the Delaware,” here depicted after the 1851 painting byEmanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816-1868). It is framed with the traditional leafy rose border and dotpatterned rim, excellent condition, light crazing, two tiny rough spots on rim,unnoticeable, tiny piece of pottery under glaze at image central, like grain ofsand stuck in glaze, inherent to make, other little pinprick divots and pointson reverse inherent to make, all else blemish free. Marked on verso with blue seals and importersmarks, with the plate title, “George Washington Crossing the Delaware.”

5) “MarthaWashington” here depicted after the painting by Gilbert Stuart, the same whopainted the portrait of George Washington, her image blurred as is common withflow blue transfers, thickly framed with the roses and leaves border and edgedwith the traditional dotted rim. Marked on verso with blue seals and importersmarks but blurred beyond legibility, however we can assume the same due totheir shapes as the rest of the series, with the plate title, “MarthaWashington/ Wife of George Washington.”

6) “Priscillaand John Alden” image taken from George H. Boughton’s (1833-1905) illustration,“Why Don’t You Speak For Yourself, John?” referring to the love story of JohnAlden and Priscilla Mullins, Mayflower pilgrims, romanticized in HenryWadsworth Longfellow\'s narrative poem, “The Courtship of Miles Standish.” HerePriscilla sits at her spinning wheel while John Alden leans in closely, acharming cabin room around them, with his hat on a bench and a bottle vase onthe window sill. Image bordered with the leafy roses pattern and dottedrim. A couple of tiny rough spots at rim, small roughened dots of blue glazeare raised along a one-inch area of the surface edge, unnoticeable but can befelt, no hairlines or blemishes, excellent condition. Marked on versowith blue seals and importers marks, with the plate title “Priscilla and JohnAlden” and quote “Archly the maiden smiled, and, with eyes overrunning withlaughter, Said, in a tremulous voice, “Why don\'t you speak for yourself,John?” -The courtship of Myles Standish, Longfellow.”

7) “TheBattle on Lexington Common,” here depicted after the 1898 painting byHoward Pyle (1853-1911), titled “The Fight on Lexington Common, April 19, 1775, from \'TheStory of the Revolution by Woodrow Wilson 1856-1924,’ published in ScribnersMagazine, January 3, 1898.” It is framed with the traditional leafy roseborder and dot patterned rim, excellent condition, light crazing, two tinyrough spots on rim, unnoticeable. Markedon verso with blue seals and importers marks with the plate title, “The BattleOn Lexington Common/ April[1]9th, 1775.”

8) “TheBattle on Lexington Common,” same as above, one small chip/divot to lower leftfront surface and a couple of rough spots at rim, two chip/divots to surface onreverse with a roughened nibbled area along under-rim edge, not visible fromfront but can be felt with finger, all else excellent condition, lightcrazing. Marked on verso with blue seals and importers marks, with theplate title, “The Battle On Lexington Common/ April 19th, 1775.”

9) “Landingof the Pilgrims, Plymouth,” after an 1869 painting by P.F. Rothermel(1812-1895), framed with the traditional leafy rose border and dot patternedrim, excellent condition, light crazing, two tiny rough spots on rim and asmall rough divot on reverse inherent to make, some light utensil marks onfront surface if held to light, unnoticeable. Marked on verso with blue seals and importersmarks with quote, “ Ay, Call It Holy Ground The Soil Where First They Trod: They Have Left Unstained What There They Found,- Freedom To Worship God,” andthe plate title, “Landing Of The Pilgrims/ Plymouth.” Date letter unintelligible, most likely 1903, as the others.
