Offered is a beautiful antique carved shell cameo brooch. It features the subject of the allegory of Night and Day, represented by two goddesses. Eos in the front, depicts the goddess of day, wearing a wreath of blooming flowers and the morning sun rising at her breast. Nyx is behind her veiled head nodding in sleep beneath the crescent moon. She wears a wreath on her head of opium poppy pods, and and owl sits on a bed of clouds below her. The shell is carved in nice relief with the coloring nicely highlighting the subjects. This piece is set in a twisted ribbon bezel stamped 9ct on the back. It has a safety chain and original old c clasp and t hinge. It could be fitted with a bale at the top and worn as a pendant if you wish to remove the safety chain. This piece is in good antique condition with a minor chip on the edge of the cameo at 9:00, visible upon close inspection and some minor internal lines common to older shell pieces. It measures 2\" by 1 1/2\" and weighs 10.2 grams. Lovely and collectible piece with a highly desirable subject.
