This is a lovely antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch.I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The exquisite stones are classic grey and white banded agates from Montrose, orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire and green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum.The thistle plume is made from paste amethyst made to simulate real amethyst from the Sutherland hills.
The brooch has no hallmarks ( has silver and makers JC&S stamps ) which is fairly normal for piece from this period but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The width is 3.5 cm ( one and two fifth inches ) and the pin and C type clasp are in good working condition and original.
