\"BLACKSIDE\" Vtg SINGER FEATHERWEIGHT 221 sewing machine, case, accessories 1941:
$995.95

If you\'re a fan of the \"blackside\" finish this 1941 Featherweight would make a nice addition to your collection! The so-called \"blackside\" finish came out during World War II, when chrome was reserved for military use. It involves a process which has something to do with black oxide, though I don\'t remember exactly what, sorry. In fact, the official Singer name for this finish was Black-Oxide, and the \"blackside\" name was never used by Singer. It gives a lovely, low shine in deep black to pieces that it is used on, and many collectors prefer this look. My research indicates that there was also a restriction on the amount of civilian goods, such as sewing machines, which could be produced. The sewing machine featured in this sale has a serial number of AG 013*** and is one of 18,250 numbers allotted on July 1, 1941. This is quite a rare machine, and has the lovely \"blackside\" scrolled face plate and black stitch length plate which were used on these machines. I believe some also had a blackside presser lift bar in the back, which this one does not have. However, several of the attachments which came to me with this machine also have this finish, and I have added a few more from my stash. This machine came to me with an adjustable zipper foot, a generic screwdriver and a tube of grease, which is probably from a later era. The flexible foot is in place, and it also had a narrow hemmer, ruffler and gathering foot in the blackside finish. It came with a manual which I assume is original, but has suffered from extensive nibbling. I\'ve provided a complete manual, (Rev 340), for the new owner to use. Also, to make this outfit more complete, I\'ve provided a seam guide, an adjustable hemmer and a pair of screwdrivers in the blackside finish. And, finally, I\'ve added a Singer storage box # 160809, and will provide a key for the case latches. This machine is in good used condition, with plenty of shine in the painted finish, a face plate looking like new, and no sign of rust that I could find. I sewed briefly with it - everything was working correctly and it sewed a nice stitch. It was pretty dusty, and I wiped most of the dust off but did no other cleaning. I would strongly recommend that the new owner get this serviced before using it extensively, as it is 76 years old and has definitely seen use. There is wear appropriate to its age, especially on the front edge of the bed, along with a few other scratches, dings, etc. The spool pin is firmly upright, but has a couple of scratches around the top section. NEW INFO: The feet on the bottom of the bed were very poor, and have been replaced. The foot pedal is worn and dirty - the feet on the bottom are \"mashed\" and there is a small bare spot on one cord at the entry point of the 3 pin plug. The case also shows wear, with some loose fabric and various scuffs and marks, and part of the handle is missing. The wide tray is present, as are both latches, which are fully functional - somewhat unusual for an older case. I\'ve learned that the best thing to do is to \"catch\" the latch as you push the release button, to prevent these from snapping too strongly!ALL IN ALL, A VERY NICE BLACKSIDE FEATHERWEIGHT FOR YOUR COLLECTION!NOTE: This outfit will be carefully packed, fully insured, and sent \"signature required.\" This means you will have to be at home to sign for it, or able to pick it up at your local post office.
NOTE: I have presented the machine as it came to me, with a few additions as noted. If you are not a purist, I\'d be happy to exchange the foot pedal and cords for a set that is the same style but in better condition. If you\'re the lucky buyer, please let me know whether you\'d like me to do this.
