It set a new level of design, engineering and incorporated the finest components available at that time. It easily rivals and often out performs many top quality modern instruments. Only the early production included a heavy metal body that is practically indestructible. The metal body was quickly replaced with thermoplastic. Few metal 302\'s were produced compared to the mass produced plastic ones. Early thermoplastic was affected by ultraviolet \"sun light\" and heat that caused cracking, splitting and other deterioration. Metal is much more durable. Gold plating is expensive but is beautiful and requires very little maintenance as it will not tarnish. I send care instructions with telephone. The 302 circuit has been employed by other manufacturers and found in many military telephones. Many collectors and authorities rate the 302 as the finest telephone produced for the public.
