I believe this heavy Calvary saber is commonly referred to as Model 1840 Wristbreaker. It was one of the military sabers used by U.S. mounted forces before and during the Civil War. Made by the Charles Hammond firm of Philadelphia, the single-edged blade has a pronounced curve with a flat wide back. Saber, also called a dragoon heavy calvary saber, measures a total of 43\", the scabbard measures 37.5\" approximately.
The blade address is marked \"C. Hammond\". The heavy steel blade exhibits a semi-bright finish with scattered areas of light discoloration overall. There appears to be some sort of oil or lubricant on the blade. Blade has scattered small edge nicks. The heavy, two branch brass hilt, still with its leather washer, is in good condition and exhibits an untouched dark bronzed patina. Leather grip is wrapped with a thin double twisted copper wire wound around the handle.
Hefty iron scabbard is unadorned. It has a dark brown patina. Both sword mounts are tight and retain the suspension rings. There are several indentations in the metal scabbard.
This blade is owned by a teacher who taught history and has many historical items that were used in his class presentations. It has been cared for and stored accordingly. There is a reserve of $400.00 for this blade, do not ask for us to consider less as it is firm.
This M1840 calvary sword with its rugged looks and reasonable price would compliment any blade collection!
