Item Description:Japanese Taisho or Early Showa Era Japanese Antique Stencilfor dyingtextiles“KATAGAMI”. These stencils are made from the bark of themulberry tree and then treated with the juice of just ripened persimmons which make the paper strong and resistant to water. These beautiful Japanese Katagami from the Chubu or Nagoya area in centralJapan have silk backing to help support their designs. Printing with katagami uses a process of resist pastedying where paste is applied to the open space in the katagami so the printed design will be in the negative space.

Age: C1900

Dimensions:17.8 inches(45cm) by 35.4 inches ( 90cm). Some are a little bigger or a little smaller.
