A fine Zeiss brass
Microscope, marked on the tube "CARL ZEISS, JENA, No. 18634", fitted
in its original case. Its serial number would date it to c.1890s.
The scope measures about 10 3/4" tall in its closed position. Coarse focus is rack and pinion, and fine focus is by adjusting the knob on the top of the limb. It has a draw tube with marking 14-20. There is a pair of slide clips on the square stage. The sub-stage condenser has a swing-out variable iris diaphragm marked " Carl Zeiss Jena" and rack and pinion adjusting. The sub-stage vertical movement is also controlled by rack and pinion. The plano-concave mirror is good and clean.
There are three eyepieces: Zeiss 3 , maker's name is marked on the tube; E. Leitz 1, maker's name is marked on the tube; and a 4 x 20 (the top lens is not screwed to the tube properly, cross threaded I think. Hope you can unscrew it).
There are three objectives: Zeiss AA and
D, both are contained in matching brass canisters, and 1/12 Oil Imm. no
A nose-piece is also in the case.
The microscope has been well kept and is in excellent
condition for its age. The lacquer coverage is 100% and the tube is very clean,
all control knobs move smoothly and it delivers beautiful images.
The original mahogany case was well made with blue velvet trims, and brass carrying handle. The case is also in very good condition with a working lock and key.
Case measures approx. 14 3/4 x 8 1/2 x 7 inches
