This piece has been so much fun to look at, research and enjoy what I am learning. If I have it right, the ladies would put scented vinegar or perfume on a cotton or sponge pad and insert it under the pierced grille to ward off fainting or mask unpleasant odors. These receptacles were first carried in their handbags or pockets and later put on a fob or chain and put on bracelets. Probably worn around the neck too. It would be much easier for them to get them quickly. There is another compartment as you can see that maybe was used for a picture and this I am not sure of because I could not find one with two compartments. This one does not have the open grille work to let the scent come through. The pictures show you how beautiful the gold was scribed. The year 1877 is one side and the other has HCT. The only flaw other than a couple of pin size marks and normal scratchingis the cover hinge.It has come off thehinge butdoes have a tight latch-snap to it and will not come open. You can see where someone soldered it and left it untidy. All that can probably be repaired. For 137 years...hey....not bad at all. There are no marking and the jeweler that tested it said it might be gold filled and if plated a very heavy plating. It weighs 14.77 grams and is 1 1/8\". This is a very unique piece and great for a collector or to give as a gift. Thanks so much for looking from The Texas Picker.
