Antique Cobalt Blue and Gold raised relief Dragon Vase. Made in Japan dates to the late Meiji era, circa 1890 - 1912 when these cobalt blue-dipped dragon vases became popular in the west.
The two loop handles are in the form of chilong - a small mythical dragon-like creature with a forked tail.
Around the body of the vase writhe two typical Asian dragons, and though fierce looking they are not meant to be evil. The dragon in the far east is a benign creature of the sky, a bringer of wealth and power and good fortune.
It\'s a little hard to make out their forms because the gold enamel has rubbed, but you may also be able to see a pearl that\'s usually depicted between their confronting heads. The so-called \"heavenly pearl of wisdom\" in the Buddhist tradition and the \'jewel that grants all desires\'
