ALovely, Small, HighlyIlluminated, Arabic Manuscript Koran.Complete KORAN. 379 leaves (758 pages); size: 7.2 x11.4 cm (2.9 x 4.49 inches); 16 lines to a page. This is not a miniature book, because thestrict definition of miniature book is that it should be within 3 inches onboth sides. The Arabic iswritten in very small but beautiful, clear, andelegant naskhī script; in black ink. The Arabic text isvocalized throughout.

Headingsof chapters are written in red ink. Twoleaves at the beginning of the Koran are beautifully illuminated in gold andcolors. All verses are separated by golddiscs. Divisions of the Koran are markedin medallions in gold and colors on the margins. There are tens of such medallions. Recitational marks are all in red. All pages are ruled in several lines of goldand blue. Also, all there are gold linesbetween all lines. Very unusual Koran.

Beautifullybound in full brown leather, covers are embossed in goldcentral medallion as well border scroll device in gilt. Covers are slightlyrubbed, but still in excellent condition.Almost totally free from smudges. However, the first two leaves areslightly damaged by dampness causing the loss of a few words and a littledamage to the illumination as shown in the photos.

Thelayout and decorations indicate its Persian origin. Despite the minor damage, this is a trulymagnificent Koran with neat script, neat illuminations, and neat binding. A collector would be proud to own such amanuscript. [K73]
