This sale gives you the opportunity to ownawonderful example ofvery early New Englandblue cobalt decorated salt glazed stoneware dating to c1850!A highly desired and very difficult to find small sizedtwo gallon short squat stonewarecrock/jar innear mint condition.This extraordinary stoneware crock is around 163 years old, easily proven out by it's crude uneven form and fine aged patina. Examples of this age and quality are seldom if everfound now. Most have suffered damage or been broken beyond repair.
Featuringa very unusual blue cobaltfreehand decoration resembling primitive ferns and multiple curved lines & flourishes covering the entire front of the piece. Below the most unusual decoration is a crude primitive freehand "2" indicating capacity. None of the beautiful and abundant blue cobalt shows the slightest sign of any frying or wear. A true primitive piece of antique decorated stoneware chock full of crudity and character around 163 years old! Note thegentle yet preciselyincised ringrunning roundthe shoulder of the piece. An even coat ofdark brown Albany slip lines the interior. The turn marks from the potter's lathe can be easily seen around the interior walls.
Thiswonderful oldcrock/jarcomes to you in thealmost impossibleto find and highly collectibletwo gallon size.It features a crudeyet well-formed flared rim and inner seat where a lid once possibly sat.The wonderfully crude and uneven primitive formlends this most excellentexamplea unique character all it's own. Thespectacular shiny blue cobalt decoration is uniquely beautiful and stunning to behold in person! It has an evenapplication of bright & shiny salt glaze that's developed that luscious deep rich golden honey brown patina that collectors most prize.
Condition: Near mint. No cracks, hairlines, repairsor even a potstone mark. The only distraction is two old chips; one 1/2" chip at the inner seat edge along with a few tiny nibbles and one 1 1/4" chip at the base edge. That's it...otherwise mint!
