This study belonged to the private collection of Mr Glyn Hughes who recently had a retrospective exhibition in Cyprus which attracted thousands of visitors.

GH has been in Cyprus since 1956 working as a painter predominately but also as a teacher and a journalist. He was visting England often ashe had many friends painters who today had formulated the bases of British modern art. He was givenby themor bought lots of works from these artists during his life that he had kept dearly keeping in touch with the big scene. GH is one of the greatest artists in our modern history and his work carries a unique brushstroke....he is relatively unknown in the London scene because he was working all his life inan island restricting his internationalism but very much supporting his universalityIN THE ARTS.Of course hisretrospective in Walesin 2005 has placed his workon the map at least at his homeland.

GlynHughes was born in north Wales in 1931 and educated at Holywell Grammar School. He studied art at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire then taught art and drama in London for three years before coming to Cyprus in 1956. In 1960 when Cyprus became independent he started APOPHASIS with the outstanding Cypriot artist, Christoforos Savva. This was a pioneering venture and became the centre of Cypriot contemporary art. Christoforos Savva died in 1967. Since that time he has been painting continually. Hughestaught art at the English school, Nicosia where he also ran the pre-university youth club. LaterHughes was to start SYNERGY an annual group exhibition / installationary activity. This was cut down by the Coup and Turkish Invasion but the artist continued to paint. He has had one person exhibitions in Cyprus and the U.K., and represented Cyprus at the Cairo Triennale. Shows: Athens, London, Beirut, German, Switzerland, Cyprus, China, and Australia. In theatre design he has worked in Cyprus, U.K., Greece, Germany, and the USA. He had beenArts Editor for The Cyprus Weekly and for ten years he had beenorganisingSYMPOSIART a series of lectures on British Art for The British Council and the Nicosia Municipal Centre. A retrospective exhibition tour covering the last fifty years of Glyn Hughes career took place in Wrexham, Wales, U.K. near the endof 2005. Two years after Glyns death the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMac),in collaborationwith the Pierides Foundation and the Cultural Services of the Ministri of Education and Culture organized and presented the major retrospective exhibition Glyn Hughes 1931-2104. style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\">
